One of my favorite new picture books this past year was I Don’t Want to Be a Frog by Dev Petty, so I decided to use it for a storytime about Frogs. This one turned out to be a lot of fun!
The opening song for all my storytimes this session is The More We Get Together, using the ASL signs.
Book #1 – I Don’t Want to Be a Frog.
The kids all thought a frog who didn’t want to be a frog was a very funny idea. There was a lot of giggling and commentary on why the frog couldn’t be each different animal. At the end of the book, we realized that the little frog is safe from being eaten because he IS a frog and decided that it’s pretty good to be yourself!
Next up was a flannel board story called Frog on a Log. (Story and flannels to follow.)
After that we sang If You’re Happy and You Know It and Simon Says by The Wiggles and moved around a bit!
Book #2 was I’m a Frog! by Mo Willems
I love all of the Elephant & Piggie books, but this is one of my favorites! I just love how confused Gerald is by Piggie’s pretending and how silly it is to see a pig hopping around, pretending to eat flies, and croaking like a frog! The kids really liked this one – I used an elephant puppet and a slower deeper voice for Gerald, while I did a higher voice for piggie.
We sang 5 Green and Speckled Frogs next. I had made a tube story prop for this, but next time I might use flannels and the hand motions. I taught the kids the hand motions and they did it for the first frog, but when I started using the prop, they all forgot about the hand motions and just watched me moving the froggies on the tube to make them jump in the pool. Oh well. Live and learn.
Our last book was The Wide-Mouthed Frog by Keith Faulkner.
This was a great book to end on! Not only is it funny, but the pop-ups are really pretty impressive. We spent some time talking about what happened and why the wide-mouthed frog pretended to be a small-mouthed frog at the end. If I were doing this storytime for a slightly older group, I might also have asked them how all three books today were alike and how they were a different.
We ended with A Very Simple Dance to Do and then we made paper bag frog puppets for craft time.
