Before this session started, my co-worker asked me to make her a flannel set for Ten Flashing Fireflies by Philemon Sturges. If you’ve never seen this book, you should definitely look it up because it’s amazing. Anyway, she told me it was perfect for adapting into a flannelboard rhyme – and it so is. Obviously, since there are so many versions of this board that storytimers have created like this one from Kidjamboree, or this one from Storytime Katie, or this one from Amy on Catch the Possibilities. I love all of the variety and am adding my own version here just to join the club!

One thing I did was to make my fireflies all different colors so that they could be used for other rhymes as well. I also used some glow in the dark paint…you know, just in case one of us decides to try out a glow-in-the-dark storytime at some point. The different colors came in handy when I planned my own Fireflies Storytime. Since I am doing Mother Goose storytimes for the summer, the Ten Flashing Fireflies rhyme was just too long for my group, unfortunately.

One option would have been to shorten the rhyme to Five Flashing Fireflies but, I found this awesome Six Little Fireflies rhyme on Storytime ABC’s. It was perfect for my group! They love naming colors and we all had a great time doing hand motions for this rhyme – we “whooshed” for the wind by making the same motion we do for washing the itsy bitsy spider out, then we “whistled” for the breeze by wiggling our fingers out and away from our bodies, and then we hammed it up with a great big AHHH-AHHH-AHHH-CHOOOO!!!!

They LOVED this! And I did, too!

Six Little Fireflies

(Adapted from “Five Little Fireflies”)

Six little fireflies blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of each other’s light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went a red light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

Five little fireflies blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of each other’s light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went an orange light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

Four little fireflies blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of each other’s light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went a yellow light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

Three little fireflies blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of each other’s light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went a green light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

Two little fireflies blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of each other’s light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went a blue light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

One little firefly blinking in the night

Looking at the glow of his very own light.

Whoosh went the wind.

And whistle went the breeze.

Then out went his purple light

With a great big sneeze!

Aaaaaachoooooo!

Six little fireflies no longer blinking in the night

Flew off with each other in the pale moon light.
